What is carbonyl iron, and why do we use it?

Iron helps bring oxygen to every cell in the body. It’s one of those essential nutrients you need to take in on a daily basis. Unfortunately, iron deficiency is one of the most common nutritional deficiencies in the United States!

While not a substitute for food sources, choosing a multivitamin with iron is one of the easiest ways to ensure you’re getting the iron your body needs on a daily basis. That’s why Geritol® multivitamin contains 90% of your daily value in every dose. Still, iron can sometimes be difficult on the stomach, which is why we’ve chosen carbonyl iron for Geritol multivitamin.

What is Carbonyl Iron?

Carbonyl iron is a pure form of mineral iron that is naturally regulated by the body, making it gentler on the system. Unlike many other forms of iron available, carbonyl iron is not derived from animal sources or blood. Instead, carbonyl iron is a very fine white or grey powder. That’s why you might also see carbonyl iron referred to as “pure iron micro particles.”

Why does Geritol® MULTIVITAMIN Contain Carbonyl iron?

Geritol® contains carbonyl iron because it tends to be easier on the stomach. Because of the unique way that carbonyl iron is absorbed by your system, common side effects associated with iron supplementation (including gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, dark colored stools, and/or abdominal distress) may be minimized.

Many people find that carbonyl iron is a well-tolerated, milder alternative to other forms of iron. Its gradual, prolonged absorption also makes carbonyl one of the safest forms of iron available.

What does “naturally regulated” mean?

When we say that carbonyl iron is naturally regulated by the body, what we really mean is that your body has mechanisms in place to help process this type of iron more easily. The body’s own gastric acid helps to metabolize carbonyl iron, providing for more gradual and gentle absorption than you might find with other types of iron.

Why do I need a multivitamin with iron?

Iron has a number of important roles in the body. Most importantly, it helps to transport oxygen throughout the body via the bloodstream. Without enough iron in your blood, you may become iron deficient and/or anemic.

Common symptoms of iron deficiency anemia include:

  • Weakness
  • Dizziness
  • Irritability
  • Headaches
  • Paleness
  • Fatigue
  • Shortness of breath

Who Needs Iron the Most?

Everybody needs iron, but it’s especially important for certain groups of people including: females of menstruating age, women of childbearing age, pregnant women, vegans or vegetarians and endurance athletes. Carbonyl iron is used as a dietary supplement and to avoid iron deficiencies and iron deficiency anemia.
